Recycling the Past

After 65 years, the famous Tunnel Diner closed in 2013. Located in Jersey City next to the Holland Tunnel the diner was a mainstay of the community for generations.

While Recycling the Past wasn’t able to save the diner, we did salvage the iconic enamel and neon “Diner” sign for you.

The former owner and operator of Tunnel Diner was present for the removal of the sign and it turned out to be a very emotional day as he explained he had put three kids through college running the eatery.

In addition to the diner’s own merits stemming from longevity and rave customer reviews, Tunnel Diner also has a Hollywood claim to fame. The restaurant was the location of the movie City Hall starring Al Pacino and John Cusack.

RTP now has the sign for sale in their New Jersey shop. It does need some restoration but is in pretty good shape. Made in two parts, the sign separated when it came down, but can easily be put back together.

Imagine re-erecting the sign roadside next to your establishment for the next 65 years!
