Atlas Birdbath

Atlas Birdbath - 718

Atlas was a Titan, condemned by Zeus to forever support the vault of the heavens upon his back. Resulting from this legend, any male figure used as an architectural support is known as an atlas. Atlantes were very popular in the 17th century Baroque period as well as 19th century Classic Revival. However, examples of atlantes can be found as far back as 480 B.C. in Greek architecture. This piece is made of concrete.
